OUUC History Moments1952 - Unitarian Fellowship of Olympia. Meeting location: clubroom and other rooms of the Olympia Community Center, 8 p.m. 1st and 3rd Sunday evenings 1952 - Traditions/Events: Started a tradition of a social evening on fifth Sundays. Started a lending library, soliciting books on religious philosophy. The first "Unitariana" was published on October 1, 1952, on onionskin using carbon paper for copies. 1952: "Unitariana" carried a regular column, "Participles," giving personal tid-bits about members. 1952: UFO helped the effort to send "warm clean useable clothing" to Korea. 1952: The bylaws established $1.00 as the membership fee. In addition to pledges for the Fellowship, people were asked to contribute to the United Unitarian Appeal and the Unitarian Service Committee. 1953 - Unitarian Fellowship of Olympia. Meeting Locations: Community Center then in February to the YMCA. Met 1st and 3rd Sunday evenings. Then moved to the Girl Scout Little House (1102 N. Washington) for evening services and held children's RE in the Hotel Governor downstairs. 1953: Speakers/Topics: Dr. John Gill, "Time Is What You Make It"; UFO Jerome Kuykendall, "Do Unitarians Believe Less?"; Dr. Frank Ricker, Dir. of Pacific Coast Unitarian Council, at Easter, "Neither Myth Nor Miracle"; UFO James Nelson, "God: Person, Force or Phantom?" 1953: Traditions/Events: First picnic at Mathews' beach (Dr. Frank and Alison Mathews), called Barnacle Beach. 1953: Summer conferences were held at Lewis and Clark College in Portland--$28.00 for one week. 1953: Started an adult discussion group on second Sunday evenings; later a telephone committee was set up to remind people of these "forums." Celebrated first Fellowship Christmas with the children. "Unitariana" was a single sheet until April 2, 1953, when it was periodically printed on two sides. 1955 - Unitarian Fellowship of Olympia. Meeting locations: Girl Scout Little House then homes for adult services. Oct. 23 began Sunday School at the Women's Club, 10 a.m. 1955: At Halloween, a social evening at Trail's End Ranch billed as "A Night at Madame Toussaud's Wax Works." 1955: The "annual Christmas Program" involving children was directed this year by Helen Christopher and titled, "How the Christ Child Got His Birthday." The UFO was cited in the Jan. 4, 1956 as having been fifth among all fellowships in the nation in contributions to the United Unitarian Appeal in 1954. 1957: In October, UFO started collecting MJB coffee bands for a coffee maker. |
