Philip Simmons was a member of the congregation Art served in New Hampshire. In 1993 at the age of 35, a husband and father of two young children, Phil learned he had ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Learning to Fall speaks to his deepening appreciation for life as his physical being diminished. As we read on the book’s jacket: “Learning to Fall illuminates the journey we all must take - ‘the work of learning to live richly in the face of loss.’ From our first faltering steps, Simmons says, we may fall into disappointment or grief, fall into or out of love, fall from youth or health. And though we have little choice as to the timing or means of our descent, we may, as he affirms, ‘fall with grace to grace.’” Art will lead a discussion about the understanding of life Phil shares in Learning to Fall – May 6, Foreword, Chapters 1-4; May 13, Chapters 5-8; May 27, Chapters 9-12.
The Reverend Arthur Vaeni is Minister of the OUUC.
