Church Activities The Book Group’s monthly meetings (third Thursdays) will resume September 18. Books selected so far are: September 18 -- Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life (Barbara Kingsolver et al, 2007, 2008); October 16 – Infidel (Ayaan Hirsi Ali, 2007, 2008); and November 20 – The Spiral Staircase: My Climb Out of Darkness (Karen Armstrong, 2004). All interested in discussing these books are welcome. Pete Taylor and Mary Anne Trause are co-facilitators of the OUUC Book Group. Are you interested in membership? Mark your calendars now for our Membership Class - One session, Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, 9:00 am - 2:00 pm, led by Diana Finch. No registration fee-other class materials supplied. The Membership Class is recommended for those who wish to become a member of the Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation even if you have been a member in another UU group. The seminar is also open to those who simply want to deepen their understanding of UU membership, our congregational covenant and particular form and style of governance. This session will include a complimentary lunch of soup (one of which will be vegetarian,) salad, bread and hearty conversation. Please advise us of any childcare or other needs you might desire before the seminar is held so proper arrangements can be made. In lieu of this Membership Class an alternative path to OUUC membership could be an individual session with our minister, the Rev. Arthur Vaeni, arranged through our church administrator, Darlene Sarkela. Stop by the church office to sign up. Opportunities for Service Join the newsletter folding team. The team meets once a month for a couple of hours to fold, staple and label the church newsletter. The next opportunity to join the team is Thursday, August 21 at 1:00 pm. Stop by the office for more information. Coffee Crew Coordinator Dorothy Mehaffey hopes that people on the coffee crew will continue with their current schedule. If you need to make any changes please contact Dorothy at dmehaffeyd@aol.com. If you are interested in serving on the Sunday morning coffee crew (it’s a great first step to getting involved at the church) let Dorothy know of your interest. In the Larger Community Home Hospitality is needed for Pacific Northwest District Unitarian
Universalist community ministers meeting at OUUC September 12 and 13.
If you can host a visitor, please contact Carol McKinley, cdmckinley@earthlink.net. General Information How do I get a name tag? How do I get a newsletter? How do I pay my pledge? How do I get involved in (fill in the blank) church activity? These are some common questions floating around the church. Do you have questions about how things work at the Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation? The church administrator is working on a new “users guide to OUUC.” All questions are welcome. If you are a newcomer, a new member or someone who has been around for quite a while, please ask. If you are wondering about something, chances are that someone else is too! You can call the church office at 786-6383, ext 1, email liberalfaith@olyuu.org, go to the church website, write a letter or stop by. If you need an answer right away and can’t wait for the users guide, please let us know. Our neighbors on East End Street have voiced some concerns over speeding on the street going to and from church. Please keep your speed down. It is even more important now that we have a children’s playground in the nearby park. There is also a concern about illegal parking in the cul-de-sac. The cul-de-sac must be kept clear to allow for emergency vehicles and fire engine trucks to turn around in an emergency. Five Tips for Good Members: 1) Smile. 2) Find someone who's alone and speak with them. 3) Smile. 4) Look for temporary name tags on people and engage them in conversation. 5) Smile. Large print programs are available. Please see one of the ushers. There’s a great way to stay informed about church activities – sign up to receive announcements by email. Visit www.olyuu.org/MailingLists/ or stop by the church office to sign up. Sign up for the electronic version of the newsletter too. The artwork on display in the sanctuary is by Ann Kirchhoff. Please share your responses to the work with Ann. |
